What Is the Expansion?
Dalmia Bharat Sugar and Industries Limited is expanding its global footprint by developing an integrated sugar project in Tanzania through its subsidiary, Eagle Agrotech Tanzania Limited (EATL). This entity is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eagle Agrotech Holdings Limited (EAHL), in which Dalmia Bharat Sugar holds a 51% controlling stake. The remaining 49% equity is held by Symphony Global LLC, an investment company led by Mohamed Ali Rashed Alabbar, the founder of UAE-based Emaar Properties.
This collaboration combines industrial expertise in sugar production with strong regional investment backing to establish a greenfield manufacturing complex.
Strategic Rationale
The move into Tanzania is driven by the country's structural sugar deficit, where domestic demand consistently outpaces local production. By establishing captive sugarcane plantations across 10,000 hectares, expandable to 20,000 hectares, the company aims to secure a reliable feedstock supply and reduce dependence on external sourcing. This integrated model is designed to facilitate import substitution within Tanzania while providing a strategic gateway into the broader East African market.
The project aligns with the company's long-term objective of diversifying geographically and entering global bio-energy markets to mitigate domestic volatility.
Business Model
- Phase one focuses on 70,000 MTPA sugar production with future expansion headroom to 150,000 MTPA
- A 20 MW cogeneration facility will utilize bagasse for internal power needs and potential grid export
- The project plans to transform into a diversified bio-energy platform by maximizing by-product utilization
- Revenue will be driven by local sugar sales in Tanzania and regional exports within East Africa
- Captive plantations ensure long-term operational resilience and lower cost of production
Industry Outlook
The Tanzanian sugar industry is characterized by high growth potential due to rising per capita consumption and government incentives for local industrialization. Historically, the region has relied on imports to bridge the gap between production and consumption, making it a lucrative destination for integrated players. Furthermore, the global shift toward bio-energy and ethanol blending presents additional opportunities for sugar complexes to diversify their revenue streams beyond traditional sweeteners.
Dalmia Bharat Sugar's entry into this market positions it to benefit from favourable long-term market fundamentals and regional trade agreements.
